Blue mussels, Mytilus spp., occur on rocky and sedimentary shores worldwide where they often form dense aggregates. These assemblages change the local environment and create unique habitats. By extensive filter-feeding, the mussels regulate availability and flow of resources such as nutrients and organic material, and are thereby important in benthic-pelagic coupling.

Habitat & Range Blue mussels can be found throughout the intertidal in calm, sheltered locations. They often forms dominant mats that cover the underlying substrate completely. They use their strong byssal threads to attach to rocks, docks, pilings, and other solid substrates. Blue mussels are effective water filters.

The Atlantic blue mussel is native on the North American Atlantic coast, but is found intermixed with M. trossulusnorth of Maine. In Atlantic Canada, M. trossuluswas found to have smaller shell growth values than M. edulisand contain less meat than M. edulis.

Blue mussel shells are blue in colour and covered by a black outer layer. Habitat. Blue mussels live in intertidal areas to a depth of 15 m, as well as estuaries, oceans and coastal waters. It has succeeded in establishing itself at widely distributed points around the globe, with nearly all introductions occurring in temperate regions and at localities where there are large shipping ports (Branch and Stephanni 2004). The blue mussels may have evolved defenses to an invasive species unusually quickly — but the fact they evolved in response to the invader is not at all unusual.
